Fable of the Duck and the Snake

Fábula del Pato y la Serpiente

A orillas de un estanque,
diciendo estaba un pato:
«¿A qué animal dio el cielo
los dones que me ha dado?

Soy de agua, tierra y aire:
cuando de andar me canso,
si se me antoja, vuelo;
si se me antoja, nado».

Una serpiente astuta,
que le estaba escuchando,
le llamó con un silbido
y le dijo «¡Señor guapo!

no hay que echarse tantas flores;
pues ni anda como el gamo,
ni vuela como el halcón,
ni nada como el barbo;

y así, tenga sabido
que lo importante y raro
no es entender de todo,
sino ser diestro en algo».

Moraleja: Más vale saber una cosa bien que muchas mal

Esto es una litografía de hace ya algún tiempo y aunque suelo estar de acuerdo con la enseñanza de las moralejas, en este caso no lo estoy y es que en mi profesión he tenido que ser un 4x4, saber de todo, adaptarme a lo que hubiera que hacer en el momento....ser como el pato de la fábula y además no solo entender de todo como dice la serpiente, sino saber hacerlo y bien hecho...bueno yo y todos los que nos hemos dedicado a esto....¿a que sí?

Fable of the Duck and the Snake

On the banks of a pond
a duck was saying:
"To what animal did heaven give
the gifts it has given me?

I am water, earth and air:
When I tire of walking
if I feel like it, I fly;
if I feel like it, I swim".

A cunning serpent,
who was listening to him,
called out to him with a hiss
and said, "Handsome sir!

You mustn't be so full of flowers;
For he neither walks like the fallow deer
nor flies like the hawk,
nor anything like the barbel;

And so, be it known to you
that the important and rare thing
is not to understand everything
but to be skilled in something".

Moral: It is better to know one thing well than many things badly.

This is a lithograph from some time ago and although I usually agree with the teaching of the morals, in this case I do not and in my profession I have had to be a 4x4, know everything, adapt myself to what I had to do at the time.... be like the duck in the fable and also not only understand everything as the snake says, but know how to do it and well done ... well me and all of us who have dedicated ourselves to this ...., right?
